PlayStation Announces Launch Date For VR Headset

Playstation VR

Gamers knew the PlayStation VR was coming sometime in October, but electronics giant PlayStation announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this week a launch date of October 13.

The PlayStation VR is the first console virtual reality system to be released.  The company said it was coming sometime in October back in March, but the exact date was unknown. The PlayStation VR hopes to compete against the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive with a lowered price tag of US$400.

Just like its PC counterparts, gamers may have to purchase a little extra.  The PlayStation VR requires a PS4 console, the PlayStation 4 camera and many games need the PlayStation Move controllers.  If none of these are owned, then the price adds another circa. US$500 for the complete VR system.

Despite the additional costs, PlayStation still beats both its rivals on price.  The Oculus Rift costs US$600 and the HTC Vive $800, and both require high end PC computer systems to run.  Sony hopes its VR system becomes the de-facto choice not only because of its price, but also its library of games that are available on launch. An Assassin’s Creed tie-in game is already in development as well as popular VR games Eve: Valkyrie and Until Dawn: Rush of Blood.
